Decade Long Experience in Marketing

After spending more than 12 years in marketing, I have learned one simple truth: you can have the best ideas in the world, but without a solid strategic plan, they are just ideas. The plan is the blueprint that turns good intentions into actual, measurable results. I have seen this firsthand throughout my career, from my time as a Senior Marketing Strategy Manager at Buzz Bingo to my secondary gigs with football clubs like Clyde FC and Stenhousemuir FC. A consistent, data-driven approach has always been my secret weapon.

My job at Buzz Bingo is to turn strategic planning into action and boost our success and customer engagement. It requires digging into the data to make smart decisions that optimise our marketing efforts. It is not just about hitting "go" on a new campaign; it's about ensuring every single marketing initiative is perfectly aligned with our bigger business goals. For instance, I had to create specific plans for social media, CRM, and customer acquisition. The goal was to increase engagement and conversions while cutting down on customer churn. These projects demanded careful planning to ensure every action. From mentoring my team to managing local budgets, they all share our overall objective.

Successful Implementation of Strategic Plan

One of the most intense and rewarding projects I was rebranding 30 Gala Bingo clubs to Buzz Bingo, requiring intense brand management to protect and grow our new identity from day one. The planning was incredibly detailed and involved building an omnichannel brand. This experience showed me how critical it is to plan strategically, be flexible, and fully integrated across every channel, to succeed on a tight deadline.

“Strategic planning in marketing is about connecting the dots. It's about seeing the big picture and meticulously mapping out the steps to get there.”

One project I'm particularly proud of is helping to recruit almost 12,000 new members for a new bingo venue. It wasn't a one-off stroke of luck; it was a carefully thought-out, multi-faceted strategic plan. We handled membership drives, managed a dedicated team, and used both traditional and digital marketing. I even worked with an external advertising agency, which highlighted the importance of collaboration in a successful strategy.

My background in the sports industry also taught me some valuable lessons about planning. As Chief Marketing Officer for Stenhousemuir FC and Marketing Director for Clyde FC, I focused on building impactful strategies for the unique world of sports.

At its core, strategic planning in marketing is about connecting the dots. It’s about seeing the big picture and then meticulously mapping out the steps to get there. It’s not just about setting a target; it's about understanding the competitive landscape and using those insights to shape your approach. It is also about empowering your team and ensuring every single action, no matter how small, moves you closer to the larger vision. Strategic planning is a continuous cycle of testing, trying out new ideas, and sharing what works to improve national campaigns and drive growth.

Ultimately, strategic planning isn’t just a part of the job; it is the job. It's the engine that transforms a decent idea into a powerful campaign to sustained business success. It's all about foresight, data analysis, and working together to innovate and grow.
